Tip #14 — Always Get Permission
As an email marketer, you need to make sure that you have permission to send people emails. This means that they need to opt-in to your list rather than you sending email out of the blue.
There are two options when creating an autoresponder list:
1. Single Opt-in : Reader signs up on your website or squeeze page and is automatically added to your list.
2. Double Opt-in : Reader signs up on your website or squeeze page and is sent a confirmation email that contains a link that must be clicked before being added to your mailing list.
The second option is preferable as it reminds people that they have indeed signed up for your list. This helps cut down on complaints that may occur. It also prevents spammers from submitting fake emails to your autoresponder and clogging up your account.
